Some tentative suggestions for tomorrow's Aintree card, a meeting which over the years has proved something of a personal graveyard...
Only five go to post in the totesport Bowl, including Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander. Trainer Nigel Twiston -Davies has previously maintained that, overall, a bold approach pays dividends; although the race has cut up, this looks tricky enough. I'm tempted to oppose and marignally prefer What A Friend who comes here fresh to Nacarat.
In the Mainfesto Novices' Chase I'll take a chance with The Nightingale who jumped well the last time at Kempton; both Somersby and Mad Max had tough races in the Arkle just over three weeks ago.
I'm not inclined to oppose Big Buck's in the opener but he'll be no price while I'll consider an each-way interest in Me Voici as a play against likely favourite Sanctuaire in the 2.35.

What A Friend put a smile back on Sir Alex Ferguson's face following Manchester United's exit from the Champions League last night at the hands of Bayern Munich. What A Friend (5/2) took the totesport Bowl, beating Carruthers three and a quarter lengths; Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander (11/8f) put in several sloppy jumps before unseating Paddy Brennan at the fourteenth.
Arkle fourth Mad Max (4/1) showed no ill effects from that race by taking the novice chase from the front, beating Somersby (6/4f) nine lengths. Selection The Nightingale may have been spring-heeled at Kempton but he wasn't here, jumping to his right on the second circuit and stumbling badly at the twelfth. He came home third; that was his first chase going left-handed - I wonder after this if connections will feel he's better going the other way round...
Having missed Cheltenham Me Voici (6/1) came to this fresh but he fell away disappointingly two out to finish sixth. His best form has come on soft / heavy going but I expected a much better show here. The race was won by 40/1 shot Orsippus (third in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham) who beat his Cheltenham conqueror Sanctuaire into third while the Triumph second Barizan had to settle for second spot once again.
